After about two weeks we were able to get out of the city. We had decided to try to avoid the heat by taking the northern route. Neither of us had driven cross-country before, so we just took a map and decided to make up our route as we went. It was good to get out of New York and out on the open road. Driving through the rolling Pennsylvania hills we got hungry and stopped at a supermarket for cheese and cold cuts, which we ate while we drove. After lunch we both got horny at the same time. Renée went down on me, but it was hard to concentrate with the semitrailers looming up behind. The drivers had a perfect bird’s-eye view down on us. At last I swerved off onto a dirt road and we both charged into the woods. There we did it, all sweaty in the sun, on a big rotten fallen tree, with flies buzzing all around.

The first stop was Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, a little redneck town about an hour and a half outside Pittsburgh, where my brother Rocky had just landed a job teaching at a boys’ school. Rocky is a specialist in the history of thought, so he’d had trouble finding work in the United States. He ended up teaching English at this school. There was the town of three thousand rednecks, a faculty of 27, and all those boys, so he was feeling a little claustrophobic. He was teaching his favorite book, Walden, and most of his students, who had strong business careers in mind, couldn’t understand how any guy could waste so much time just hanging out in the woods.

The headmaster had built the place up from an old resort and now he rode around in a leftover golf cart, cheering on the students. “Hey boys! That’s the way we do it. Kick that goal. Pass that ball. Swim that lap!” He ran the whole place from that motorized cart. He spotted us arriving, drove right up to the door of my brother’s house, came in, had a couple of beers and said, “We got it all worked out here. It’s a beautiful place. Now all we gotta figure out is how to get rid of the boys.”
